Holy Ghost Diner


The community diner provides fellowship and free hot meals to the indigent of the community.



2017 Diner Report - Presented by: James C. & Elinor Nacoste-Eaglin, Co-Managers

Holy Ghost Community Diner continues to provide a vital service to the needy of Opelousas and surrounding communities. The diner provides hot lunches on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each day of the week (except holidays and extenuating circumstances of the volunteers).

The Diner has always been fortunate to garner support from various sources. An agreement with Second Harvest of New Orleans & Acadian was signed November 2010 thus they have become the largest source of food for the Diner. Beginning April 2011 thru March 6, 2017 the Diner has received 95,103 pounds of food and a freezer for the kitchen was awarded to the diner through a grant.

*Diocese of Lafayette- Monetary Donation Yearly

*Eunice Food Bank- meats and a variety of groceries- 200 lbs. monthly

*Claver Lodge- variety of groceries-100 lbs. monthly

*Mrs. Lucille Thomas (Thomas & Thomas Catering)- 500 lbs. turkey parts, groceries            and  baked goods- yearly

* Adeline Pickens- baked goods-yearly

* Rollins Buckeneer R.V. Club- Monetary Donation Yearly

*Knights of Peter Claver Council 8- picking up donations/or purchased items quarterly


Number of Patrons Fed: November 2008 thru December 2016 is 82,507 which averages 10,313.4 person per year.

There is a core group of committed volunteers who devote their time, talents and gifts to assure the smooth operation of the Diner. They come from various Catholic Church Parishes and other denominations throughout Opelousas. The majority of volunteers are members of KPC Council and Court 8. We could not operate if it were not for this group of committee volunteers whose ages range from 69-86.

We are always looking for volunteers. There is a need for volunteers to help in various areas:

  • Wrapping of forks
  • Setting of tables on Monday morning
  • Washing of pots and pans
  • Chopping of onions, onion tops, bell peppers, etc.
  • Assisting with baking under the guidance of Co-manager
  • Stirring and keeping a watchful eye on pots
  • Prepping of chicken and other meats to be cooked

This is a short list of our needs. Due to health issues some productivity challenges with the co-managers has declined. We really need someone or several individuals to come in and learn the operation of the Diner. James and I will forever be appreciative of all the support we have been given to continue with this project.
